Maura Hamer,
Matwork Pilates Teacher
I am a Matwork Pilates teacher with a special interest in supporting people to connect to their bodies in a holistic way. Connection is fundamentally a whole-system experience, where mind and body can be brought into balance. In my experience, Pilates can be highly effective in developing body awareness, control, mobility and strength. With this greater level of connection comes increased confidence and trust in what the body is capable of.
I discovered Pilates in my mid-twenties at a time of challenge and turbulence. I found my way back to my body via various forms of dance and movement practice, and discovered Pilates to be a wonderful tool for developing physical awareness, control, and ease-of-movement.
My journey into motherhood has also opened up a new level of appreciation for what the human body is capable of, the depth of strength, and the capacity for healing. Learning to adapt to my postnatal body, with back pain and muscle weakness as a result of diastasis recti, I was struck by how much contradictory information there is on safe postnatal exercise for these issues. I aim to bring my experience into practice by supporting individuals to gain strength and confidence safely, working to personal abilities and goals.
